Using CPAP Machines and a CPAP Pillow for Sleep Apnea

Sleep apnea is a medical condition which causes disruption of sleep when normal breathing ceases for periods of time. This condition, also known as obstructive sleep apnea, is caused by the structures of the upper airway collapsing during sleep and inhibiting breathing. The body reacts by briefly waking and restarting respiration, which results in fitful and inadequate sleep. The most effective treatment for sleep apnea is through the use of a continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) device.

CPAP machines can be used in conjunction with CPAP Pillows during sleep to maintain an open airway and prevent the periods of apnea that interrupt sleep. It is provided by a compressor-like device and mask that fits over the nose. The device forces air through the nose and into the airway at a constant pressure. This air pressure is adjusted to a level that provides enough force to hold the upper airway open at all times and allow for uninterrupted sleep.

A CPAP Pillow will usually provide immediate relief of the daytime sleepiness and fatigue that sleep apnea patients experience. However, new users of this device will often have complaints. The most common complaints pertain to getting used to the device itself. Having never worn a mask while sleeping, many users complain that the CPAP mask, harness, and tubing make their sleeping difficult by limiting their movement in bed. The device is also noisy and can affect the sleep of both users and their sleep partners. It can also lead to discomfort to the nose and other airway structures. Though CPAP machines have the ability to pump air through a small water tank in order to humidify the air, many new users will still complain of dryness to their nose and throat. Other problems, such as abdominal bloating or leaking masks, may require adjustments to the equipment or pressure setting.

A CPAP machine require a prescription from a physician, and an initial pressure setting and fitting may be done at a sleep clinic. CPAP devices are normally covered for diagnosed sleep apnea, though patients should contact their insurance provider before renting or purchasing any equipment.

What an interesting hub. I had no idea CPAP pillows existed. Also helpful to be reminded that CPAP means continuous positive airway pressure. Maybe if I write it out enough times, I will remember it. :-) Thanks for the info.

Your lengthy discourse on CPAP under the section about the "pillow" is very confusing. Why have you not mentioned ANYTHING about the pillow other than that it exists. How is it different from any other pillow? What is it made of ? How much does it cost?

Where does one buy one? Your use of the English language is very limited for a doctor!

Your sentence in the quote below referring to this device, eventually indicates that you have reverted to talking about the CPAP machine and mask but the paragraph starts with a sentence about the pillow and the reference to "this device" immediately following same, with no change of subject, means that the pronoun phrase "this device" refers to the pillow.

Not interesting at all, but seriously lacking in logic.
